Is there any hope for Iran in their fight for free-speech? *** Contents of the video: 00:00 Intro 00:04 What is happening in Iran? 00:13 What caused the protests? 00:40 What is being done? 01:43 Outro *** The Iranian government has imposed an internet blackout for its 80M+ citizens amidst protests that have killed more than 40 people. The protests came after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of the morality police in Tehran. Since then, the Iranian government has restricted internet access, social media platforms, and cell-phone networks to stop citizens from speaking out. Iran was subjected to a similar blackout in 2019 amidst deadly protests over fuel prices. In a move to pressure the government, teachers unions announced strikes, and students in at least 28 universities joined a nationwide campaign to boycott classes. Reports suggest that the internet in Iran will continue when the government decides that civil unrest has ended. While authorities blame foreign instigators and anti-establishment enemies for the protests, social media is awash with images and messages from athletes, artists, and celebrities standing in solidarity with women in Iran. The loss of internet connectivity is a major concern. The information blackout means we don’t have a precise death toll and violations of human rights become much more difficult to document. If protests continue to grow, the Iranian government could enforce a total shutdown of the internet and cell-phone networks across the country. *** About NordVPN NordVPN is part of Nord Security, an online security company that aims to provide users with all the necessary online security tools.
