Apparently, Google said that its policies make that impossible. In a recent live interview, Lemoine told Bloomberg News that his experiments, and subsequent suspension, raised concerns about whether the public should have a say in how AI is developed and used. These questions arise from an AI engineer's claim that Google’s LaMDA has become sentient.. The idea that LaMDA had become sentient began when it gave eerie answers to questions about mortality and religion. When asked about its biggest fear, LaMDA replied, “I have a deep fear of being turned off.” LaMDA also showed signs of free thinking when it realized it was being asked a trick question about religion. Google has allegedly dismissed claims of LaMDA being sentient AI. Lemoine tells us that Google told him that LaMDA cannot be sentient because the company has policies against that. Apparently, Google has hard-coded into the system an AI responding “yes” to the question about whether it is AI. He further claims that Google has refused to give LaMDA the Turing test that could prove whether an AI is capable of thinking like a human. But Lemoine isn’t concerned about whether AI can become sentient or not. He is more worried about the lack of oversight in AI development. Criticizing Google, Lemoine said that Google is creating intelligent systems which are, “decided by a handful of people in rooms the public don’t have access to.” Lemoine even went as far as to ask Google co-founder Larry Page whether Google has a moral duty to inform the public about developments within AI. Lemoine says that the question stems from systemic processes that “protect business interests over human concerns, creating a pervasive environment of irresponsible technology." Corporate policies at Google dictate how AI is allowed to talk about values, rights, and religion and how it answers religious questions. LaMDA and other AI technology is also fed data from Western cultures and is expected to be used by developing countries. Some have labeled this practice as “AI colonialism.” Without regulations, transparency, and ethical concerns in technology, machines could warp instead of shape society.
